Suicide Among South Asians in the United States: A Growing Public Health Problem

This research study quantifies and describes suicide among South Asian Americans (SAAs), an emerging population that are underrepresented group in research. The purpose of this was to examine key characteristics deaths SAAs. Data were employed from DuPage County, IL, a county with large SAA population. Following federal recommendations for disaggregating American data at granular level, four researchers used name recognition identify all cases classified as the County coroner’s database 2001 2017 ( N = 38). Coroner’s reports analyzed contextual details correlating factors specific each suicide. Overall, 76.3% victims male 45.0% married. An analysis coroner established 71.1% decedents showed behavioral disorders predisposing risk including mental health diagnoses (57.9%), reported prior attempt (21.1%). Among these only 34.2% had received any psychiatric care. Significant errors racial classification SAAs, lead gross undercount by 55% suicides assigned different race or ethnic group. Future studies must increase scope other geographic locations high concentrations SAAs one fastest growing populations U.S.
